The first hurdle to refurbishing/renovating the Historic White Sands Theater was completed last night. The city approved a $1 million dollar LEDA for the project. For those not familiar with the plans for the theater, let me spell it out.
The old art deco style aesthetic will be maintained while modernizing the interior and upgrading the equipment. A digital screen will be installed giving the capability to host eSports tournaments on any gaming platform. With a digital screen there will be no need for a projector room, so the entire second floor will be opened up giving the theater a balcony.
The Otero County Film Society will have a museum in the building showcasing the rich movie history of the area. Did you know the first movies filmed in this area date back to 1911?… that pre-dates New Mexico being a state!
White Sands Theater will host independent movie premieres, meet & greets, eSports tournaments, movie sing-a-longs & quote-a-longs, morning cereal and cartoon days, watch parties (Super Bowl, World Series, etc), film classes, and so much more. There will be something for everyone to enjoy.
The project’s progress will be noted on the website https://www.whitesandstheater.com so keep checking back to see what is happening. The next step is to be approved at the second city meeting and gain access to the funds. Then the construction can begin!
